私が東日本大震災での現地ボランティア活動をおこなった際、アメリカ赤十字社から来ている

ハリーさんという方と知り合いになりました。ハリーさんは世界中で災害ボランティア経験をしている方で、

よかったら本校の高校生に向けてボランティアに関するメッセージを下さいとお願いしたところ、

こころよく「ビデオレター」を撮影させて頂きました。高校生向けに簡単な英語で、シンプルですが

奥の深いお話をしていただきましたので、ここでご紹介します。

尚、このビデオレターの聞き取り、翻訳を国際英語科の小田君と金君にお願いしました。

ヘルメット姿も凛々しいのは金君、

左側が小田君です。

金君は三ヵ国語（韓国語・日本語・英語）

が堪能で、２年生の時に英検準１級合格です！

小田君は、２年生の時に英検１級に見事合格！

３年生の現在、二人は海外への進学を目指して

頑張っています。

Hello, my name is Dr. Harry Wright. I'm from the state of Georgia in the southeastern United States.  I am here now in northeastern Japan volunteering for the earthquake and tsunami relief.

My teaching position is in the area of international law and trade therefore I am able to travel. For many years I've been involved in all kinds of volunteer work. I have worked with eight volunteer groups around the world.  I've done work at twelve different disaster sites in a number of countries. In the last few years, I volunteered after  the tsunami in Indonesia, Haiti's earthquake, Chile's earthquake and many other places. However this is the first disaster in Japan that I participated in.

こんにちは、私の名前はDr.ハリー・ライトです。私はアメリカの東南にあるジョージア州から来ました。私

は、ここ日本の東北で地震と津波からの救済のためにボランティア活動をしています。私の専攻は、国際法律と

貿易であるので旅をすることができます。長い間、私は様々なボランティア活動に関わってきました。私は世界

中の八つの団体と様々なボランティアに関わってきました。私は違った国々の１２の異なった災害でその活動を

やってきました。インドネシアの津波被害や、ハイチの地震被害、チリの地震被害などいろんなところでボラン

ティアをしました。しかしながら、これは私が初めて参加する日本の災害です。

I think volunteer work is excellent for anybody, and you ought to take any opportunity to participate. You get back much more than what you give. This tsunami is probably the worst natural disaster that hit any country. In my country, we had a terrible hurricane named Katrina; hundreds of thousands of people were affected by it, but we only lost less than two thousand people. In Japan in less than an hour, twenty eight thousand people died or went missing.

私はボランティアは誰もができる立派なことだと思います。そして、あなたはそのチャンスを生かすべきです。あなたが誰か

に手をさしのべるよりも、あなたが受け取るものの方が多いのです。この津波は、どの国を襲った自然災害よりも最もひど

いものかもしれません。アメリカでは「カトリーナ」というひどい台風が数十万の人々に影響を及ぼしました。しかし、死亡し

た方々は二千人以下なのです。だが、日本では一時間以内に、二万八千人が死亡もしくは行方不明になりました。

What is needed in Japan right now is volunteers. I have worked as a volunteer with the Red Cross in disasters, and I know that after long-term disasters the number of volunteers is very high in the first month and then the number drops in the second month. After that, it drops again in the third month and so on.  This disaster will take two or three years to complete recovery, and there will be a need for volunteers throughout that time.  Any time you can give to the volunteer effort is needed now more than ever.  As the months roll on, your volunteer efforts will be still be needed.

だから今、日本に必要なのはボランティア活動です。私は赤十字と共に災害のボランティアをしていますので、こういうこと

を知っています　長い期間の災害では、最初の月のボランティアに参加する人々の数は非常に高いですが、二ヶ月後には

その数が減っていきます。そして、その次の月はさらに減ります。このような災害は、復興に大体二、三年ほどかかります

が、その間、ずっとボランティア活動は必要とされるでしょう。そして、あなたは、今まで求められたどんなボランティアよりも

必要とされるボランティアをすることができます。

We have a saying in the US: "Out of sight, out of mind." The world-wide news coverage was tremendous when the tsunami hit. But now several months later, the world is not hearing about it because it is considered yesterday's news. The needs of these people in Tohoku are still quite great.

アメリカではこういうことわざがあります「去るものは日々に疎し」（親しかった者でも離れるにしたがってだんだん疎遠にな

る。または死んだ人は月日が経つにつれてだんだんと忘れ去られる）

最初に津波が襲ったとき、世界中の沢山のニュースに取り上げられたものの、数ヶ月過ぎた今では、助けを必要とする人

たちのニュースは世界に行き渡っていません。そして、その人たちこそが本当に助けを必要としています。

By the way, volunteering doesn't mean you have to do something heroic. Today we are working on restoring photographs that have been found in order to return them to families. That may be all that some of them have left of their former lives.  We will be cleaning up some of the debris along the waterfront and maybe helping people remove mud from their houses.

ボランティアをすることは、英雄的なことをするわけではありません。今日は、見つかった写真を修復して家族に返す作業

をしていました。これからは、河岸にたまった瓦礫を取り除き、もしかしたら、現地の人たちの家に溜まった泥を取り除く作

業もするかもしれません。

You can't do much by yourself. It's only with a large number of people that recovery can be accomplished. Each individual can contribute to the whole. There is a story and I think it's told in Japan as well. A father has five children. He tells them to go out and  each get two large tree branches for him. Then he gathers the children around him and takes a branch from each child and breaks it. After that, he gathers all the branches into a bundle which he cannot break.  That's why we need volunteers because together with other people, you can have a real impact.

一人では何も成しえません、成し得るのは多くの人が集まってこそです。こんな話があります、この話は日本でも同じような

話が語り継がれていると思います。五人の子供を持った父親がいました。父親は子供たちに大きな木の枝を二本拾ってき

なさいと言いました。そして彼は、子供たちを集めて（二本の内の）一本ずつその枝を取り、折っていきました。次に、彼は

（残っていたもう一本の）全部の枝をまとめて折ろうとしたところ折れませんでした...だから私たちはボランティアが必要な

のです、なぜなら多くの人を集めることで大きな影響を残すことができるからです。

 If you impact just one person's life, that's worth it. I have a construction hat that I wear during volunteer work. I don't have it here now, but I have it in my car. On the back of this construction hat, there is a picture of Colonel Sanders, the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken and it says 'KFC ojisan'. My friend put that on there just so someone would laugh. People need something to raise their spirits as well as the physical help. One of the most important things for these people in Japan to remember is that they are not forgotten.  As a volunteer, you are part of that indestructible bundle  of sticks. But also you can bring a little joy and  some hope to people who have lost that as well as everything else.

 I encourage you to volunteer. Volunteer for this tsunami relief. Volunteer anywhere you can with organizations; you will receive back far more than you will ever give.

そして一人でも影響を与えることができたら、それだけで価値があります。私は安全帽（ヘルメット）を持っていま

す。今は車に置いているのでここにありませんが、この安全帽の後ろには、誰かが笑ってくれるかと思ってケンタッ

キーフライドチキンのカーネル・サンダースの似顔絵を描いて「KFCおじさん」と書いてあります。人々は身体的

（物理的）な助けだけでなく、精神的な助けも必要です。最も重要なことの一つは、被災した日本人が、忘れられて

はいないと思い出させることです。そして、ボランティアの一員として、あなたは一本の枝になるだけでなくほんの

少しの喜びと希望を被災した人々に与えることができます。だから私は、あなたにボランティアをすることを勧めま

す。この津波のためのボランティアとか、他の組織であなたが参加可能なボランティアに参加してください。そうす

ることで、あなたは自分が誰かに与えたものよりも、もっと多くのものを得ることができるでしょう。

文部科学省が、被災地域の児童・生徒が必要とする支援をより受けやすくするよう、

被災地域の支援ニーズと各団体が提供可能な支援を相互に提供し合うための

ポータルサイト「東北地方太平洋沖地震・子どもの学び支援ポータルサイト」を開設しました。

このポータルサイトに私たちは４月２１日に登録し、生徒の受け入れに対し下記のような

支援を提供する申し出を行いました。

The Ministry of Education established an internet portal so that the students who are in the stricken area can get support easier. The purpose of the internet portal is to make sure that every organization can make coordinated and effective support efforts to meet the needs of the victims suffering from the earthquake and tsunami disaster. We registered for that internet portal on April 21st, and submitted the following proposal for the acceptance of students into various programs at Daiichi.

★福岡第一高等学校では、東北地方太平洋沖地震の災害指定区域の

 被災生徒の就学受け入れを行います。本校は男子寮・女子寮があり、

 　隣接する第一薬科大学付属高等学校とあわせて、普通科・音楽科・

福祉科・国際科・自動車科・機械科・コンピューター情報処理科・デザイン科・

保育科・薬学進学コース・芸能コース等の多彩な科やコースがある為、

様々なケースの転入学に対応できます。また、学費・寮費・学用品・

制服等の支援も行います。中学（今春卒業生）・高等学校から本校

 への転入学を希望する生徒に対し、柔軟に対応いたします。

Here at Fukuoka Daiichi High School, we will conduct a reception for students from the touhoku region who were effected by the earthquake disaster. Our school has both male and female dormitories. Adjacent with Daiichi Pharmaceutical University High School, our high school has a variety of departments and courses to offer such as general education, music, welfare, international, automobile, machine, information processing, design, and childcare departments, as well as pharmacy and entertainment courses. Due to the wide variety of departments and courses offered here, we are able to deal with many kinds of transfer cases. We also offer financial support for school expenses, dormitory expenses, school supplies and uniforms. Middle school students who are going to graduate this spring and high school students who hope to transfer and enter to our school are welcomed and encouraged to contact us about how we can meet their individual needs and goals.

福岡第一高等学校には音楽科の生徒を中心とした吹奏楽部があります。

吹奏楽部は以前より、演奏活動を通してのボランティアを行なっています。

３月１１日に起こった東日本大震災の後、定期演奏会でのチャリティーコンサートを行い、

集まった募金を、被災した東日本の高等学校を支援する活動に役立てています。

The Wind Orchestra Charity Concert At Fukuoka Daiichi High School there is a wind-orchestra which consists mainly of  Music Department students.  The wind-orchestra is working on more volunteer work than ever before by creating performances to benefit the people of the Touhoku region.  After the March 11th earthquake, they began conducting charity concerts during their periodic performances and made full use of the donations to support suffering high schools in the Touhoku region.

３月２４日には「第１０回福岡第一高等学校吹奏楽部OB定期演奏会」で募金活動を

行いました。アンコールのかわりに、被災された方々への鎮魂の祈りを込めて、

ラヴェル作曲「亡き王女のパヴァーヌ」を演奏しました。

On march 24th, they had the Fukuoka Daiichi High School Wind Orchestra Performance  and began their volunteer work.  In place of a simple encore, they performed Pavane pour une infante defunte, composed by Ravel, to prey for the victims with all their heart and soul.

４月４日には、スプリングコンサートを

中学生と合同で行い、２回目の募金活動

を実施しました。

　会場に集まったたくさんの方々から暖かい

拍手と、沢山の募金をしていただきました。

本当にありがとうございました。

　次の演奏会は１０月２８日にアクロス福岡シンフォニーホールで

行われます、皆さん是非、聴きに来てください。

On April 4th, The wind orchestra volunteered for the 2nd time by putting on a spring concert in unison with some middle school students. The many people who gathered at the assembly hall gave a warm hearted round of applause for the joint-fundraisers.  The concert was was a compete success.  Thank you very much to all who came.   The next performance will be held at Fukuoka サンパレス on October 28th.  Everyone is invited to please come and join us in listening to some wonderful music for a good cause.
